Guidelines for Presenting Authors
DAFx24 papers will be presented in one of two formats: (a) Oral Presentation + Show & Tell, and (b) (digital) Posters. We’ve let authors know which format applies to their papers via email, along with details (consolidated below).
As you prepare your presentation, please review our EDI Guidelines for Presenters here. These guidelines are designed to ensure that DAFx24 is inclusive and accessible to all participants: EDI Guidelines for Presenters.
In case you’d like to add this year’s logo to your presentation/poster, you can find DAFx24 branding material here: DAFx Branding.
Oral Presentation + Show & Tell
ORAL PRESENTATION:
Each slot will last 15 minutes, comprised of 12 minutes for your presentation, 2 minutes for Q&A, and 1 minute for the handover and introduction of the next presenter. This will take place in the main lecture hall (03 MS 01). The projector aspect ratio will be 16:9 (but you can of course display 4:3 slides with blank side bands). Stereo audio playback will be available. In case you’d like to add this year’s logo to your presentation, you can find DAFx24 branding material here: https://dafx24.surrey.ac.uk/branding/
IMPORTANT: To minimise handover time and ensure appropriate recording of presentations, we will ask you to not use your laptop and use the room’s computer (Windows) instead. You will be able to use either Powerpoint or Acrobat Reader. If you use Keynote, please convert it to Powerpoint or PDF before uploading. We kindly ask you to upload your presentation at least 24 hours prior to the start of your oral session via the form you received over email.
SHOW & TELL:
Following your presentation, all oral presenters will be expected to participate in a Show & Tell session for informal discussions with interested attendees. During the Show & Tell session, you will be provided with a 43-inch freestanding monitor with a laptop tray. You will connect your own laptop to the monitor via HDMI. The monitor aspect ratio will be 16:9 (landscape) and it will not be touch-enabled. The monitor supports audio output via the HDMI cable, but we recommend bringing a pair of headphones for better audio quality and to reduce distraction at nearby stands. We can provide HDMI adapters or headphones upon request, but we ask you to please let us know in advance through the form you received over email.
You will be free to display whichever material would facilitate discussions, e.g. demos, audio files, slides (including the ones you prepared for your oral presentation), or a poster if you so wish. In any case, we kindly ask you to display the title and authors of your paper prominently and at all times, ensuring attendees can easily identify which paper corresponds to each stand.
If you opt for a poster, and you intend to display it as a single slide on Powerpoint (so as to be able to incorporate audio or video elements), you might want to consider “looping” the presentation to avoid spurious clicks leading to the end-of-presentation black screen. To do so, go to the Slide Show tab, click on Set Up Slide Show, check Loop continuously until ‘Esc’ under Show options.
In case it helps with selecting the right font size, please see below a size comparison of the 43-inch monitor (16:9 ratio) and a standard A0 poster.
Posters
Instead of a standard poster stand, you will be provided with a 60-inch monitor where you will be able to display a (digital) poster. This approach not only eliminates the need for printing and transporting posters but also allows for the inclusion of dynamic elements.
We still imagine posters to present an overview of the information at all times, such that anyone jumping in can understand what the work is about. We encourage dynamic inlets (e.g. animated plots, videos, audio.. surprise us!) if they help convey the information better. You may also include full-screen videos or demos if you wish, though these should be used very sparingly.
IMPORTANT: The monitor will have a (landscape) 16:9 aspect ratio, and we recommend you format your poster to fit the entire monitor. We can provide a blank 16:9 template if needed.
The monitor will connect to your laptop via HDMI and will have a pair of (monitor quality) loudspeakers. The monitor will not be touch-enabled. We can provide HDMI adapters or headphones upon request, but we kindly ask you to let us know at least 24 hours before your session through the personalised link you received over email.
Please note that while in previous years there has been time allocated for short oral presentations for posters (the so-called “poster craze”), this will not be a feature of this year’s DAFx due to the high number of submissions and the limited time in each day.
In case you intend to display the poster as a single slide on Powerpoint (so as to be able to incorporate audio or video elements), you might want to consider “looping” the presentation to avoid spurious clicks leading to the end-of-presentation black screen. To do so, go to the Slide Show tab, click on Set Up Slide Show, check Loop continuously until ‘Esc’ under Show options.
In case it helps with selecting the right font size, please see below a size comparison of the 60-inch monitor (16:9 ratio) and a standard A0 poster.
